What If I Don't Want To Be An Organ Donor?

Most states ask people whether they want to be organ donors whenever they apply for or renew a driver's license. If the person agrees to be an organ donor, it is duly noted on his or her license. (There is often no mechanism for declining to be an organ donor, leaving the decision to your next of kin.)

The U.S. government and many private groups also distribute free organ donor cards. (Again, few of these cards offer the option of declining.) At the time of death, organ donor cards convey consent to remove the organs. For those who do not want to be organ donors, it is clearly more difficult to express those wishes.

That is why we have created the Organ KeeperTM card. This card, pictured below, states several compelling reasons for choosing not to be an organ donor. The Organ KeeperTM card may be signed by the cardholder and two witnesses.
